Our top tips for starting your undergraduate degree studies

Advice for the new academic year for LD Training’s BA (Hons) Business Management students

Business management degrees in Stanmore, Dudley and Nottingham

We’re excited for the start of the new academic year and we can’t wait to welcome our new and returning students to our LD Training campuses in Stanmore, Dudley and Nottingham.

If you’re a new student beginning your undergraduate studies this year, we’ve put together our top tips to help you prepare for both your degree course and student life, so you can head into your first week of higher education feeling confident and set up for success.

Make sure your study schedule fits around your other commitments

We know that many students will be juggling their academic studies alongside other work or family commitments. At LD Training, we offer flexible study options that enable our students to attend classes on campus on just one or two days a week, including weekends, without compromising your learning experience. Speak to our Student Services team about your timetable as soon as possible to make sure it fits around your needs.

It’s also a good idea to schedule some regular time slots for studying into your weekly schedule to keep your studies and assignments on track, as well as ensuring you can attend all your tutor sessions and lectures on campus.

Get your finances sorted

First up, make sure you’ve applied for your student loan and familiarise yourself with how your loan payments and repayments work. In the UK, repayments only start once you’re earning above the income threshold, and they’re automatically deducted from your salary. Check out the government’s step-by-step advice to accessing student finance at www.gov.uk/get-undergraduate-student-loan

Next, create a monthly budget that covers all your essential costs – and remember to include a set amount for fun and entertainment costs – to help keep track of your spending. Check out free budgeting apps to help you stay on top of your finances.

Sign up for a student discounts card

Make sure you apply for the TOTUM Student Discount Card to take advantage of student discounts! This budget-boosting card and app gives students discounts on a wide range of products and services across the UK, from entertainment to fashion, to takeaways and eating out. Just sign up at www.totum.com

Check your course’s resources list

Once you’ve completed your course enrolment, you’ll be given access to our virtual learning platforms for your studies. It’s a good idea to take a little time to familiarise yourself with the platforms before your first tutorials to make sure you’re all set up and ready to go!

As part of the introduction to your course you’ll also receive a list of recommended reading and resources. We understand that hard copies of textbooks can be pricey, so we have a free library of resources available in the LD Training Library. We also recommend buying second-hand or using digital versions to keep your costs down.

Join our student community and extend your professional network

We have a vibrant student community and we offer a wide range of extracurricular activities for our students to get involved in, meet fellow students and make new friends. Throughout the year, LD Training also hosts a calendar of industry events to help our students extend your professional network and gain valuable experiences.

Feeling worried or anxious? Our Student Support team is here to help

Our dedicated Student Services team is available on campus seven days a week to support our students with any worries, concerns or questions. You can also contact the team on studentservices@ldtraining.ac.uk or 020 7998 3655. The team is here to help guide you through any challenges, whether it’s with your academic studies, finances, or mental health, and will signpost you to further help and support.

You’ll also have 24/7 free online access to the Togetherall mental health support platform, where you can access self-care resources, speak to other members in the anonymous global community, and get support from trained professionals. Look out for the welcome email from Togetherall to sign up for free.

Glen Johnson, Director of LD Training, said, “We’d like to extend a warm LD Training welcome to all our new students joining us to study for their undergraduate and foundation year programmes this September! We’re delighted you chose to study with us, and we’re looking forward to supporting you throughout your higher education journey.”
